3 stars Chelsea should sign to maintain their grip on the Premier League

Antonio Conte’s debut season in charge of Chelsea could’ve been a lot worse to say the least. But who does he need to sign in order to build on his initial success? Here at Rush Football we’ve decided take a look at three players Chelsea need to sign, should they wish to improve…

Romelu Lukaku

In early June, Diego Costa revealed to the media he that he had been told he was no longer part of Antonio Conte’s plans, leaving the door open for him to leave. In the event of Costa leaving the club, Chelsea would be left with just one recognised striker, Michy Batshuayi, who is unproven at the highest level.

This, in turn, sparked rumours of a return for former Chelsea player Romelu Lukaku, who has spent the last 4 seasons at Everton. In addition to this, Lukaku has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League and told the Goodison board he will not be signing a new contract, adding fuel to the fire. In his 4 seasons away from Stamford Bridge, the Belgian has developed into a top striker, possessing power, pace and an eye for goal, finishing last season with 25 goals in 37 Premier League appearances, making him the ideal man to replace the unwanted Spaniard.

Radja Nainggolan

Midfield maestro Radja Nainggolan is reportedly top of Antonio Conte’s wish list. The 29-year-old had another fine season for Roma, making 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring 14 times as the club finished second in Serie A behind rivals Juventus. According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Roma are under pressure to meet Financial Fair Play regulations, meaning the Belgian could be available at a cut-price. The acquisition of Nainggolan would add serious competition and strength to Chelsea’s already talented midfield.

Alexis Sanchez

With a contract expiring in Summer 2018, it comes as no surprise that Arsenal fans are nervous about losing star player Alexis Sanchez, especially as title rivals Chelsea are snooping around. Visibly frustrated at the lack of ambition and poor Champions League performances, the lure of Stamford Bridge could prove too much for the Chilean who is desperate for trophies. The departure of Sanchez would be a dagger through the heart of many Arsenal fans, who believe is a crucial in order for the club to reclaim a Champions League position. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte believes Sanchez is the final piece of the jigsaw as he looks to implement his favoured 3-4-3 formation, seeing him as the ideal man for one of the wide-forward roles behind the striker.
