As quoted by Sky Sports, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Toby Alderweireld is out until 2018.

The Belgian defender is arguably the best centre-half in the league and is part of a Tottenham defence that keeps clean sheets for fun.

He’s suffered with injuries throughout his time at the club, though, and this latest one sees him miss all of the festive period.

It’s a hamstring problem that has caused the issue and Spurs will now have to muddle on without him.

Pochettino said:

“Toby is out. We need to assess him.

“We expect he will be out for longer than we did previously.

“Maybe (Alderweireld will be back), after Christmas. That is the expectation.

“The injury is in his hamstring.”

Even so, the player has got plenty of rivals for his spot with the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the side so he might not be missed too much.

Even if Spurs go to a back-three they have the likes of Eric Dier to call on and so, whilst this is a blow, it’s not as bad as it would have been a few years ago.
