Newcastle United welcome Fulham to St James’ Park tomorrow night and will be eager to bounce back from their loss away at Leeds United.
The Magpies were level pegging with the Whites in midweek but fell away badly in the final portion of the game, eventually losing 5-2.
A response is needed against the Cottagers, then, and Steve Bruce has revealed he has no further injury problems to deal with – though the effects of covid are still being felt.
Quoted by Chronicle Live, he said:
“We have no new injury worries. We still have four or five missing through illness.
“For some of them it has had a damaging effect, it won’t be a week or two it will be longer than that.
“We hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
Rush Football’s take
Of course, there isn’t a clear suggestion that ‘long covid’ is at play here but it is a reminder that this illness does impact people to varying degrees and, indeed, of varying fitness levels.
Premier League players should have naturally robust immune systems and will be able to shrug this illness off eventually but it seems some are taking a bit more time than they’d obviously like.
Newcastle will have to keep contending with that, then, but appear to be through the worst and at least Bruce has no further injury problems to deal with this weekend.
