Crystal Palace defeated rivals Brighton in an emotionally charged 1-0 win, but fans are divided over an off-the-ball incident that saw Wilfred Zaha seemingly spit at a Seagull’s substitute.

Despite the many missed chances, rash tackles, and eventual winning goal from Jordan Ayew, the main talking point that arose from this match occurred on the sideline.

In the first half, with the score tied at 0-0 and emotions running high, an already riled up Wilfred Zaha spat in the direction of Brighton substitute Ezequiel Schelotto. This was in retaliation to the Argentine-Italian right back kicking the ball at Zaha whilst warming up on the sideline.

The referee made the decision to give Schelotto a yellow card, who continued to verbally taunt Zaha, even pretending to cry. However, Zaha got off scot-free.

Brighton fans were not happy that the Palace forward was not punished for spitting, and flocked to Twitter to praise Schelotto’s actions and condemn Zaha. Meanwhile, Palace fans seem to believe that Zaha simply happened to be spitting in that direction, and that the Brighton right back deserved his booking.

Let’s take a look at some of that reaction now:
