Carlo Ancelotti has compared Everton ace James Rodriguez to the great Brazilian striker Ronaldo when it comes to physical and technical output on the football pitch.
The Toffees certainly raised a few eyebrows when they managed to sign the Colombian attacking midfielder in the summer window and it is obvious that Ancelotti’s relationship with him and natural pull as one of the world’s top managers had an impact.
Some have perhaps argued he does not run as much as you would like, particularly in the Premier League, but his goals and assists tally has been impressive early on and Ancelotti has compared him to when he had Ronaldo at AC Milan.
Speaking to France Football, via the Daily Mail, the Italian manager said:
‘At [Ronaldo’s] arrival, he weighed 100kg. Before the first game, I told him: “You know I can’t play you. You need to lose weight”.
‘He replied “What do you want me to do on the pitch? Score or run? If it’s to run, put me on the bench, if it’s to score, play me!”‘.
‘I played him. He didn’t run, but he scored two goals. For James, it’s the same thing.’
Rodriguez is perhaps not the same weight as Ronaldo ended up at the end of his career but the quality he brings is of a similar level for sure.
And, if he keeps producing goals and assists, few will really care how much he moves.
