As Tottenham prepare to take on Crystal Palace in today’s lunchtime kick-off, we Rush Football, take a look back on Wednesday nights 3-1 victory over the Los Blancos at Wembley. Taking a look at what we learned from the resounding win…

They’re a threat to the elite

When the Champions’ League group stage draw was made in August, Tottenham fans were fearing the worst. Drawn alongside Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund two of Europe’s top clubs, qualification from this group was going to difficult to say the least. However, they have secured home wins against both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid as well as picking up 4 points on the road at APOEL Nicosia and at the Santiago Bernabéu. These results demonstrate their quality, playing with confidence against the most even the toughest opponents and come the knockout stage, no team will want to face them.

They’re the perfect club for young players

Tottenham’s starting 11 consisted of 6 players aged 24 and below, these being Davinson Sánchez, Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Ben Davies, Dele Alli and Harry Kane. Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff clearly have faith in the youngsters to deliver on the big stage, giving them the opportunity to develop into world class players. Tottenham’s approach can give young players confidence that they will be given a chance in the first team should they make the grade, giving them a massive boost in the transfer market.

It’s not all about Kane

There were a number of standout performances from Wednesday’s game, notably from Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier. Whilst Kane is a massive boost to the team, key performances from these individuals show they have more than enough quality elsewhere in the team to make up for any potential absence. They can also take solace from the fact that Son-Heung-min, Mousa Dembélé, Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko only made the bench, demonstrating their strength in depth.

They’re no longer a feeder club

Constantly seen as a club smaller than Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in terms of stature, Wednesday’s result sent shockwaves across England. Facing a Madrid side that hadn’t faced defeat in the Champions’ League group stage for over 5 years, Tottenham not only beat them but also in convincing fashion. This is an improving Tottenham side which boasts exceptional technical ability and chemistry. They are a club in the ascendancy and should they continue at this rate it won’t be long before they can attract world class players.
