Jack Rodwell is a player who many people will remember as a young defensive midfielder quickly rising through the ranks at Everton. He made his debut at the tender age of 16 and was clearly destined for the top.
After 85 senior appearances for Everton, everybody could see his potential. None more so than The Cityzens, who parted with £12 million for him to make the move to the Etihad. Unfortunately, during his time at City, he was hampered by injuries and struggled for fitness. This resulted in him only making 16 appearances over two years in Manchester.
Fortunately for Rodwell, Sunderland had been looking at some old YouTube highlights of him and thought he could add something to their team. They paid £10 million to bring him to The Stadium of Light and Rodwell was presented with an opportunity to restart his career.
Unfortunately, life didn’t pan out that way!
Rodwell has performed poorly and has been dogged by injuries during his time at Sunderland as well, managing less than 45 starts since his move in 2014. At one point, he had not won a senior game of football in 1370 days. His transfer fee plus his £70,000 weekly wage means he has currently cost The Black Cats a staggering £229,000 per appearance or an even more astonishing £4,700 per minute spent playing competitive football.
Sunderland are languishing at the bottom of the Championship and are having to reduce costs quickly. This has meant Rodwell is Coleman’s first big issue to get rid of. However, no club is willing to match his wage and it’s rumoured that Jack is happy to keep up earning this level of money for another 18 months. The Black Cats have offered to rip up his contract and let him leave for a free. This could prove to be a tempting offer with Celtic rumoured to be interested in giving him one final shot. However, Rodwell would be sacrificing over £5 million in wages.
If all rumours are to be believed, then the ball is now in Rodwell’s court and he has to decide where his priorities lie.
