Joel Matip will be missing from Liverpool’s squad against Ajax in the Champions League this evening but there is hope that he will be involved against Sheffield United this weekend in the Premier League.

The Reds are suddenly looking very short at the back with Virgil van Dijk picking up a nasty ACL injury after being clattered by Jordan Pickford at the weekend.

Indeed, the Reds are now reliant on Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho getting them through in all honesty, and the former pair do not have the best injury records.

Matip, then, isn’t playing tonight but manager Jurgen Klopp is hopeful he’ll be ready for the game with Sheffield United at the weekend.

He said via the club’s website:

“So, it was always clear after the history he had that it’s not likely he will start again after the 90 minutes at Everton. Now we left him at home but there’s a good chance that he could be involved at the weekend again.”

Matip is a good defender but his fitness and injury record is what is causing the Reds a problem at the moment looking ahead to the next couple of months.

Protecting him, then, will be key.
