Marcelo Bielsa plans on using Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi in a coaching capacity as he recovers from injury this season.

The defender’s season was over before it started with him picking up an ACL tear and he has since had surgery and begun his road to recovery.

It’s a long road of course, with Virgil van Dijk all too aware of that right now, and players will naturally need to keep themselves focused during the off-period in what is undoubtedly a tough time for them in their careers.

Berardi has always come across as a mentally tough competitor, though, and it looks as though Marcelo Bielsa is going to try and channel that and his passion for football in a positive manner by offering a coaching opportunity.

Angus Kinnear wrote in his programme notes for the Wolves clash on Monday, as transcribed again by the Mirror:

“His return to the field is some way off, but the value he adds off the pitch is just as great as that on it and Marcelo has the intention of using his experience and passion in a coaching capacity as he recuperates.”

Berardi recently signed a new contract with the club, and will surely jump at this opportunity.
