On 2nd August 2016, Manchester City announced the signing of FC Schalke’s Leroy Sané for a fee of £37 million. The German international was little-known outside of his homeland, but his performances for FC Schalke had caught the eye of Pep Guardiola who made Sané one of his first signings at Manchester City. There was plenty of debate surrounding the arrival of the youngster. For example, would he be able to adjust to the intensity of the Premier League or would his considerable transfer fee place too much pressure on him at a young age?
However, under Guardiola’s guidance the 22-year-old has thrived. During his debut season in the Premier League, Sané scored five goals and assisted three in 26 appearances, a benchmark he has already surpassed this campaign in four less games. The quick, artful and technically gifted attacker has formed a telepathic partnership with teammates Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Sergio Agüero amongst others which has lead them to play some scintillating football.
Prior to his arrival at Manchester City, Guardiola had coached and developed a number of world class players. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager sees the potential of Sané and knows what it takes to become one of the elite. It begs the question, just how far can the German go? Often overlooked in a Manchester City squad rife with quality, he possesses all the traits and attributes of a world class player. His close control is exceptional, his movement and vision are remarkable and his speed of thought is impressive. Providing the talented attacker keeps his feet on the ground, the sky’s the limit.
