With the 2016/17 Premier League season over, here at Rush Football we’re taking a look at the three young English players who impressed over the course of the campaign and, hopefully, will be able to take the expectation of this nation of ours in years to come…
Following a stellar debut season at White Hart Lane, Dele Alli has come on leaps and bounds at Tottenham under Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino. Since scoring his first goal of the season in the 4-0 win away at Stoke in early September, the 21 year old went on to score a further 17 Premier League goals including a brace against title rivals Chelsea. As a result of this excellent form, he was rewarded with PFA Young Player of the year award for the second consecutive season and it comes as no surprise that clubs such as Manchester United and Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the highly rated youngster.
Despite Sunderland’s relegation to the EFL Championship, Jordan Pickford has been a shining star in what can only be described an abysmal season for the Black Cats. The 23 year old born on Wearside made 29 Premier League starts during the season, taking home the Supporters’ Young Player of the Season award. Even though the season finale was just a week ago, there is already high demand for the young goalkeeper with a host of clubs eyeing a potential deal, with Everton firm favourites in the race to sign him up.
Having only made two Premier League appearances prior to the 2016/17 season, Tom Davies was virtually unknown to many football fans across the country, but a lot has changed since then. After a slow start to the season, the 18 year old was named in the starting line-up to face Southampton in early January, an opportunity he took with open arms. Since then, the Merseyside born youngster has gone on to start a further 17 Premier League games which included a superb performance in the 4-0 demolition of Manchester City. It was this fine form that lead to him being rewarded with a new contract lasting until 2022.
