Quoted by BBC Radio Sheffield, Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce has played down talk that has linked him to a move to Newcastle United this summer.

The former Hull City and Aston Villa manager started his current job at the Owls at the start of February and has done a decent job there so far.

Indeed, fans are hoping that Bruce’s next promotion can be achieved with them but with the Newcastle manager’s job available at the moment there might be some concern amongst fans.

Such concern, though, might fade away with Bruce’s comments in mind.

He had this to say:

“Maybe, because I’m from Newcastle (that is the reason for the rumour.)

“But no, I’ve been on holiday. I never take any notice of all that sort of speculation or tittle-tattle because the way the newspapers are today, no disrespect, I think there have been 150 managers associated with Newcastle.

“I would suppose I’m going to be one of them.”

It does seem as though his focus is firmly on Wednesday and not the Magpies.

Rafa Benitez left the club earlier on in the summer with him failing to agree a contract extension with owner Mike Ashley.

It remains to be seen who the replacement for the Spaniard is going to end up being, then, as they prepare for the Premier League.
