Speaking to BBC Radio’s Monday Night Club, Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock has revealed that he was going to send Dean Smith a text message during Aston Villa’s win over Liverpool.

The football world is still talking about a barmy Sunday in the Premier League that saw Tottenham beat Manchester United 6-1 and Villa beat Liverpool 7-2.

Indeed, it was a stunning night of football at Villa Park and Dean Smith would have loved every minute.

It appears Neil Warnock was pleased for his countryman, too, with him revealing that he had planned to send a text message but in the end ran out of time.

He explained:

“I was pleased for Dean [Smith] as well. He had a tough season last year. I was going to text him, but I got waylaid. I was going to text him, I think it was about 6-2, and I was going to say ‘how does it feel like that now Dean at 6-2? Let me know will you, with a fag in your mouth against Liverpool?’”

Certainly, it was a surprisingly comfortable night for Villa against the defending Premier League champions and it maintained their 100% start to the season, with only Everton owning a better record thanks to their extra game played.

They deserve all the praise they’ve been getting, too, and will be looking to build after the internationals.
