Danny Mills has shared his concerns for striker Jermain Defoe as the striker picked up a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury in Rangers training last week, as quoted by Football Insider.

The Gers are top of the league in Scotland – tied with Hibernian on 10 points – and dropped their first points of the season at the weekend in a draw with Livingston.

Indeed, a lack of goals is what cost them there – something Defoe could obviously help them with – but he has been missing so far this campaign thanks to the hamstring complaint.

And, for Mills, it will naturally be a concern given the striker’s age:

“Trust me, I know what it’s like getting out of bed at that stage in your career. It’s tough. Everything starts to ache a little bit more, it takes a little bit longer to warm up.

“It happens when you push the body to the extreme levels that most elite sportspeople have done. It’s not just age, it’s just wear and tear. The body starts to wear out. It doesn’t heal as quickly.

“But again, he still looks after himself very, very well. If he can get himself fit for even half of Rangers’ games, is he a good asset to have on the bench, to have around the training ground? Of course, he is.”

Defoe has looked after himself better than most professionals and it’s only recently we’ve seen him struggle with knocks at Ibrox.

The club will obviously want him back as soon as possible but they need to be careful with him too as, as Mills says, the body takes longer to recover as you get older.
