West Ham United came very close to causing a real Premier League shock yesterday night as they took Liverpool to the wire at Anfield.

The Hammers have been struggling of late and after getting dominated at Manchester City – though only losing 2-0 – few held out much hope of a result at the home of the Reds.

However, the Hammers were confident on the break and created chances – scoring two and leading with half an hour to play.

Eventually, they succumbed to the pressure the league leaders placed on them but the Irons should take real pride from the performance and confidence into a run of games now that will decide their Premier League status.

Up next, a game against Southampton where, if they can play like they did Monday, they could get a win from without doubt.

That’s the challenge now, and Declan Rice has laid down that demand to his team-mates via the club’s official website:

“That has to be standard in every game, out there on the pitch.

“Liverpool are a great attacking team, but they also do the defensive work, and we’ve got to do that as well.

“If we can cut out the mistakes then I’m sure we’ll be all right. We’ve got goals in the team and some good home games coming up that we know we can win.

“We’ve got Southampton on Saturday. We’ve had two tough games back-to-back in Liverpool and Manchester City, but there are positives to take from both. And now Southampton is a massive game for us.”
