Route to Russia:

Portugal always seem to have a challenge one way or the other to get into the finals of tournaments.

Whilst poor form has left them struggling before, though, this time around it was the immaculate Swiss side that was in their way.

The Portuguese won the clash between the two at the end of qualifying to get through with nine wins out of ten – progressing thanks to goal difference.

How far can they get:

They should be looking at the last eight as a possibility for sure.

They surprised many in winning EURO 2016 and will believe in another victory here but a group with Spain means their route to the final could become tough.

They’ve got great talent and are in decent enough form from the past couple of years, though, so are ones to watch.

Manager:

Fernando Santos.

The man who helped guide his side to glory two years ago, he now looks to achieve one of the great feats in the game by winning the proceeding World Cup.

A huge name in Portuguese football, he’s managed Porto, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon during his career and won trophies but victory here would be by far his biggest achievement of all.

One to watch:

A guy who goes by the name of Cristiano Ronaldo – you may have heard of him.

The attacker has enjoyed another successful club year with Real Madrid and will now look to complete his trophy cabinet with a World Cup medal.

He didn’t have the impact he’d have liked in the EURO 2016 final in having to come off early on and so will want to set Russia alight this summer.
