You just had a feeling they were going to do it yesterday afternoon; that, eventually, Manchester United would get the job done.

Saturdays for United fans and those of opposing clubs perhaps haven’t had that sense of the inevitable for some time, but this calendar year things are changing.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is gradually rebooting United to version: pre-Fergie-retirement and that is ominous for the rest of the league.

And, after the game, the Norwegian – who must now be a cert for the permanent job – had this warning for those beginning to remember what this Old Trafford powerhouse used to do to people’s heads:

“The manner of it [the win] is like the old days.

“I have been part of it so many times myself. I’m so pleased for the boys – they managed to claw three points out of this game.”

Of course, they are far from the finished article and they need work – but the turnaround has been frankly astonishing.

Get to the end of the season and finish in the top four and this campaign will have ended up being fairly successful.

Solskjaer, though, will tell you even so that only first place will do at his club and next season will be targeted as a return to that.
