Sometimes in football, one team that are really on form come up against a team going through a bad patch, and not at their best. It is in these games that things can get messy and you very quickly fear for the off-form side.

But we love a heavy defeat here at Rush Football, they are terrible to be on the receiving end of, but terrific when it’s your team scoring for fun! So we have compiled a list of some notable thrashings in the Premier League’s history.

  1. Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town (1995)

The two teams went into this fixture at opposite ends of the table, so Ipswich were very aware that this would be a tough match. But I don’t think any of them were expecting to be on the losing end of the biggest winning margin in Premier League history and United’s biggest win in 103 years.

It is common for players in teams with comfortable leads to take their foot off the gas, but not Andy Cole. Cole showed no remorse as he hit five goals past the Ipswich goalkeeper, breaking another Premier League record.

Craig Forrest, the Canadian goalkeeper who had to pick the ball out his net a mammoth nine times, probably breathed a sigh of relief at the full time whistle as he thought he’d never have to experience that again. However, in 2000, just as he was finally recovering from the traumatic experience and regaining some confidence, he faced United again whilst playing for West Ham.. and conceded seven more goals to the Reds.

  2. Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic (2009)

Spurs got their first goal of this Premier League fixture after six minutes, courtesy of a Peter Crouch header. Then Defoe scored, then Defoe scored and then Defoe scored, all within a seven minute window, the second quickest hat-trick in the league’s history. Not satisfied with this, Defoe felt the need to score a further two goals before full time. Therefore, the striker equalled Andy Cole’s record of five in one match, but it had already been equalled by Alan Shearer and has since been achieved by the likes of Sergio Aguero and Dimitar Berbatov.

Wigan’s defending was abysmal, however, they only went into the dressing room 1-0 down at half time. Yes, this means that Spurs scored a record-breaking eight goals in one half, which is impressive, but almost a bit rude.

The Latics’ only goal came from Paul Scharner, which made it 3-1 at the time, but Paul would’ve had to score a further eight if he was to save his side that day.. and he didn’t. So in many ways Paul Scharner is to blame for this defeat.

  3. Portsmouth 7-4 Reading (2007)

It wouldn’t be a list of high-scoring matches if we didn’t include the Premier League’s highest scoring match ever. With eleven goals in total, this match would’ve been an entertaining one for anyone to watch, except maybe Reading fans. It took place at Fratton Park, but unlike the other thrashings discussed so far, this one actually retained some level of competitiveness throughout.

Benjani Mwaruwari began proceedings by scoring two for Pompey, but Reading fought back and the sides went into half time level at 2-2. In the second half, Portsmouth scored five, including Benjani finding the net again for his hat-trick, Reading missed a penalty and netted a further two. All in all, this was a fantastic game for the neutral and, with a total of nine different goal-scorers, this equals another record, shared with Arsenal’s 5-4 victory against Tottenham in 2004.
