Whisper it quietly, but the new Premier League season is not that far away now and, before you know it, we’ll but wondering just exactly what it’s like to not have football about…

Indeed, it isn’t long until we delve into another season of club football and so, as is customary at this time of year, it’s time to wheel out some season preview material.

Here at Rush Football, then, we’re taking a look at each Premier League club’s best four stars for the coming campaign and next up it’s last season’s runners-up Tottenham.

See if you agree with our selections…

Victor Wanyama

Victor Wanyama had an incredible first season at Spurs. When he first joined it was difficult to see how he would break up the Dembele/Dier axis, which had been dominant at the end of the 15/16 season. However, with Dembele starting the season suspended, Wanyama had an empty spot in the XI to walk into. Whilst the start alongside Dier was rocky, he grew into the role. With 40 interceptions, 69 clearances and 4 goals last season, he was a great example of Spurs’ versatile squad and how solid they are across the pitch. In the coming season he will be vital for Spurs, especially with dealing with the Wembley pitch. That huge pitch leaves a lot of ground that needs to be covered and Wanyama will be key in filling those gaps left in the Spurs defence as it gets stretched.

Christian Eriksen

The Danish playmaker has come so far since he started at Tottenham. The start of the season wasn’t his best, but post-christmas he was unstoppable. Eriksen made Spurs tick, right as they were playing their best football. It feels as though he has finally found a way to dictate play that works for him. He is involved in almost every good piece of play for Spurs, and provided 15 assists and 8 goals in the Premier League. Whilst not having the goals return of Alli or Son, his high number of assists and key passes (3.1 per game, the highest in the division) meant that they would most likely have not had the goal returns they did without him. In the coming season he will be key for Tottenham. If he finds the space on the Wembley pitch to expose defences then he will undoubtedly tear teams to shreds.

Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen has been at Spurs for 5 seasons now, and has been through it all. Despite his clear desire to leave in the Sherwood era (and how can you blame him,) he has grown to embrace Spurs again. This season he showed how good he can be. Many would say that his first season was his best for Spurs, but in 16/17 he was just as good, if not better. 43 tackles, 42 interceptions and a heavy involvement in 13 clean sheets. Vertonghen showed that he has grown, and moved on from the difficult part of his time at Tottenham. Whilst many would consider Alderweireld to be the better player, Vertonghen has been hugely underrated and there is a solid case for suggesting that he had a better season. He has grown into the player that Tottenham have known he could be. In the 17/18 season expect him to continue to grow, he’s now well in his prime, but somehow seems to be getting better.

Harry Kane

It wouldn’t be an article about Tottenham if it didn’t mention Mr Tottenham himself. The man is a phenomenon. 29 goals in 30 games in the league, he tore apart defences with ease. He ended the season in style, scoring 7 goals in 2 games to win the Golden Boot. He has been accused of using penalties to pad out his stats, but that’s just not true. With no penalties he would still have been the league’s top scorer, a feat which he achieve in emphatic style. The Tottenham man is more than just goals, he also has a role to play in the build-up. He claimed 7 assists, and is often used as a key outlet to help start attacks. He can hold the ball up and will often make the right passes. In the next season he wants to reach 100 premier league goals. He’s currently on 78, and with his goal tally increasing season on season (3, 21, 25, 29), who the hell are we to say he can’t do that?
